June 2026 was not a quiet month for streaming box office. The headline number belongs to Veerabhadrudu, the Telugu-language epic that pulled in $3.4 billion against an $800 million production budget — a 4.3x return that, on paper, looks modest until you remember that no Telugu-language film has come close to that gross in the modern OTT era. That's a structural shift, not a blip. The film's dominance across South Asian diaspora markets and its surprisingly strong performance in Southeast Asia suggests that regional Indian cinema has found a distribution infrastructure capable of competing directly with Hollywood tentpoles, rather than running parallel to them.

The ROI story, though, belongs elsewhere. Ne Zha 2 generated $2.3 billion on an $80 million budget — 28.2x — and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle returned 36.7x on a $20 million spend. Those two numbers, tracked across our box-office indices at Movie OTT (movieott.com), represent something Hollywood's accounting departments probably don't want to think about too hard: that animation and anime properties built on pre-existing IP can generate returns that $350 million live-action spectacles (Avatar: Fire and Ash came in at 4.3x) simply can't match. Honestly, the gap between Ne Zha 2's ROI and Avatar's is so wide it almost reads like a different industry.

What's striking is how many catalog titles are still generating nine-figure revenues in June 2026. Inception ($839M), E.T. ($797M on an $11 million budget — 75.9x, which is almost absurd), Ice Age: Continental Drift at $877M — these aren't new releases riding algorithmic recommendation waves, they're decades-old films that apparently haven't exhausted their audience. Hard to say if this reflects OTT platforms aggressively re-licensing classics or a genuine viewer appetite for comfort rewatches, but either way it complicates the assumption that new release windows dominate the monthly charts.

The two patterns worth flagging: first, Chinese-language cinema had a genuinely strong month — Ne Zha 2, The Wandering Earth II ($665M, 9.0x ROI), and the drama-comedy Pegasus 3 ($649M) all cracked the top 25, representing a combined gross north of $3.6 billion from non-Hollywood productions. That's not a regional anomaly so much as a structural realignment. Second, the budget-to-performance mismatch at the lower end of the chart is worth watching — Project Hail Mary, a $200 million production with a rating of 8.4 (the second-highest in the dataset), returned only 3.2x, which won't encourage studios to greenlight mid-budget prestige sci-fi anytime soon. X-Men: Days of Future Past, a $250 million film, managed just 3.0x. Big budgets don't guarantee proportional returns. They rarely do.

The Lilo & Stitch live-action adaptation cleared $1 billion on a $100 million budget (10.4x), which — given the film's somewhat mixed 6.7 rating — suggests brand affinity is doing more work than critical reception in family titles. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($894M, 8.1x) reinforces that point. Neither film is reviewed like a great piece of cinema, but both are printing money. That's the franchise paradox studios keep betting on, and June's data doesn't give anyone a reason to stop.
