Baki Davrak

Davrak's screen career got its start in the late 1990s, when he appeared in two films that were quietly significant for German-Turkish cinema. Kutluğ Ataman's Lola and Billy the Kid (1997) and Thomas Arslan's Dealer (1999) both put him on the radar of critics paying attention to that particular wave of hyphenated-identity filmmaking coming out of Germany at the time (Wikipedia). Then — and this is the part nobody really talks about enough — he stopped. Stepped away from acting entirely and worked as a park caretaker. Hard to say if that was a deliberate choice or just circumstances, but it's a detail that makes his eventual comeback feel less like a career arc and more like a real life. Fatih Akin found him again, cast him as Professor Nejat Aksu in The Edge of Heaven (2007), and that was that. The film won the Prix du scénario at Cannes (Wikipedia), and Davrak's performance — understated, interior, doing a lot with very little — was central to why it worked. Nejat isn't a showy role. It's the kind of part that requires an actor to trust the camera and trust the silence, and Davrak clearly does. The decade that followed showed him working steadily across Turkish and European productions. Our Grand Despair (2011), directed by Seyfi Teoman, cast him as Ender, one of two middle-aged men whose domestic routine gets upended when they become unexpected guardians to a grieving young woman (Wikipedia). Practical Guide to Belgrade with Singing and Crying came in 2012, Crimean in 2014. More recently, he appeared in Atatürk 1881–1919 (2023), a large-scale Turkish historical production (Wikipedia). On the radio side, he wrote and performed as criminal investigator Nadir Taraki in a WDR series between 2008 and 2009 — a creative sidestep that suggests he's not purely focused on screen work (Wikipedia). TV credits in German series like Wolffs Revier and Eva Blond round out a career that's genuinely hard to categorize. Which is probably how he'd want it.
