Byeon's acting career started in the margins. Small roles in Dear My Friends (2016), Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), and Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo (2016) kept him working but hardly made him a household name (Wikipedia). That's the part of the story nobody really talks about — years of showing up, doing the work, and waiting. Supporting parts in Record of Youth (2020) and When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon (2021) gradually raised his profile, but the real inflection point came with Moonshine (2021), the KBS period drama where he played a lead role compelling enough to win him Best New Actor at the 2022 KBS Drama Awards. On the film side, his Netflix debut in 20th Century Girl (2022) put him in front of a genuinely global audience for the first time — the kind of exposure that a domestic drama win simply can't manufacture. Soulmate (2023), a theatrical release, followed and extended his film credentials further (Wikipedia). Two very different platforms, two different registers of performance. He's shown he can handle both. Then came Lovely Runner (2024). Starring as Ryu Sun-jae — a musician whose life becomes entangled with a time-traveling fan — Byeon delivered the sort of performance where you catch yourself actually worried about a fictional character. Episode after episode, the show built an almost unreasonable amount of emotional investment, and Byeon was the engine of it. The Daesang at the Asia Artist Awards 2024 and a Baeksang nomination were the industry's acknowledgment of what audiences had already decided (Wikipedia). He's represented by VARO Entertainment and has released music alongside his screen work — a dual creative output that's increasingly rare to sustain at this level.
