Cathy Weseluck

Weseluck's transition from CBC Radio producer to full-time voice actress set her on a path that would run straight through some of the most-watched animated programming of the 1990s and 2000s. Her early work included significant roles in the North American dubbing scene for major anime titles — she voiced Mirai Yashima in Mobile Suit Gundam and Dorothy Catalonia in Gundam Wing, and took on multiple characters in Dragon Ball Z, including Kid Trunks and Chiaotzu, plus background work in Inuyasha and Ranma ½ (Wikipedia). That's a dense stretch of genre-defining titles, and her presence across all of them speaks to how quickly she became a go-to at Ocean Productions in Vancouver. The role that probably means the most to longtime fans of hers is Cybersix — the 1999 animated series where she voiced both the titular character and her male alter ego, Adrian Seidelman. It's a genuinely tricky dual performance, and I keep coming back to it as an example of what separates a competent voice actor from a really good one. She's said it's among her favorite projects, alongside Death Note (where she played the soft-spoken, unsettling Near) and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (TV Tropes). Three very different characters. That's the range. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is where she found her widest audience — Spike the dragon, Twilight Sparkle's loyal assistant and eventual friend, is a character who grows considerably across the show's run, and Weseluck tracked that arc across hundreds of episodes and multiple specials. Her performance in My Little Pony: Best Gift Ever (2018) captures Spike at his most earnest, scrambling to help organize the holidays with that particular mix of good intentions and mild chaos that defines the character. She's also worked as a voice director on My Little Pony Tales and Spiff and Hercules, and teaches voice acting as a coach and instructor — a side of her career that doesn't get enough attention given how many working voice actors she's likely influenced (Wikipedia).
