Stahelski's entry into film wasn't through a casting office. He came up as a stuntman — the kind of career path that demands physical discipline and an almost obsessive attention to how action reads on camera. His most visible early credit was serving as the key stunt double for Keanu Reeves on The Matrix in 1999, a film that was itself rewriting the rules of screen combat (TMDB). He didn't stop there. He went on to work as martial arts stunt coordinator on the first two Matrix sequels, which meant he wasn't just performing — he was shaping how the fights were designed and executed. That experience, accumulated over years of working inside some of the most technically demanding action productions Hollywood had attempted, is what makes his transition to directing feel less like a leap and more like an inevitability. John Wick arrived in 2014, co-directed with David Leitch, and it announced something. The film's Continental Hotel sequence — a gun-fu massacre staged with the clarity of a choreographed stage production — showed a director who understood sight lines, pacing, and the grammar of violence in a way that most action filmmakers don't. It's the kind of sequence you rewind. Chapter 2 (2017) and Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) didn't just continue the story; they built out a world. Stahelski kept Reeves at the center while layering in mythology, geography, and a growing roster of assassins and crime lords that gave the franchise genuine texture. Hard to say if any of it would've landed without the trust between director and star — a trust built across two decades of working together on set, long before either of them had a franchise to protect.
