He transitioned out of sports, left college, and spent a stretch working retail and food-service jobs before deciding to go all-in on auditions. That kind of origin story doesn't guarantee anything — but it does suggest a certain stubbornness that the industry tends to eventually reward. His 2022 output was genuinely impressive for someone still building a profile. Three lead roles: *Just My Type*, *Bridge to the Other Side*, and *Peace River*. The *Peace River* performance earned him a Best Actor nomination, which gave him something concrete to point to. Lead credits at that stage matter more than people admit — they're proof you can carry a project, not just populate the background of one. The television work followed. He appeared as Hooper in *Obliterated* (2023), Netflix's loud, irreverent action series, and then as Tommy in *Elsbeth* (2024), the CBS procedural that's become a quiet critical favorite — a show where the guest-cast slot is actually competitive, which says something about where Garland's reputation sat by that point. Then came the Peele announcement. Playing Ced in *Him* (2025) puts him in a film with one of the most scrutinized directors working today, and that's not a small thing. He's also, per recent interviews, on the verge of securing a significant TV role, and is developing an original apocalyptic zombie project he may expand into a series. The creative development angle is worth watching — it's a different kind of ambition than just chasing the next audition.
