Dana Elcar

Dana Elcar built his career the way most character actors do — steadily, without a single defining breakout moment early on, accumulating credits across film and television until the work itself became the reputation. Over the course of his career he appeared in approximately 40 films (Wikipedia), a body of work that speaks to consistent demand even if no single movie role became the thing people remember. The real turning point came with MacGyver, the action-adventure series that ran through the 1980s and into the 1990s. Elcar's path onto that show is one of those behind-the-scenes stories that's easy to overlook — he appeared in the pilot episode as Andy Colson, a character with no connection to the role he'd later inhabit (Wikipedia). When producers needed someone to fill the recurring part of Peter Thornton, an administrator at the Phoenix Foundation, they came back to Elcar. He made his first appearance as Thornton in the 11th episode of the first season, and from there the role became his for the run of the series. That's a long time to play one character — long enough that for a whole generation of viewers, Elcar and Thornton became essentially the same person. The character gave Elcar something rare in supporting television work: continuity, and a relationship with a lead (Richard Dean Anderson's MacGyver) that had room to develop across seasons. Hard to say if Elcar's earlier film work would have secured him this kind of lasting recognition on its own, but MacGyver made sure the name Dana Elcar meant something specific to audiences who grew up watching it.
