He built his early reputation not in film but in the world of variety entertainment and comedy, developing a stage presence that was physical, fast, and willing to look ridiculous when the material called for it. That willingness to commit fully to a bit, to not protect himself from embarrassment, is what eventually made him interesting to filmmakers working in tonal registers far more serious than sketch comedy.

It's not the kind of project that offers easy wins for any performer. Hidden Blade demands that actors hold contradictions without resolving them, and Dong Chengpeng, working alongside a cast that included Tony Leung Chiu-wai, holds his ground. Hard to say if wider international audiences caught it in theaters, but the film found substantial viewership through streaming platforms following its theatrical run.
