Vargas's career got its clearest early signal in 2019, when he was selected as the director and writer of two of the four greenlit USC thesis projects that year — a distinction that put him in a very small group (TMDB). One of those projects was "Milk Teeth," a horror-fantasy film that went on to win a Student DGA Award and an Imagen Award, and which has since been broadcast on PBS. Hard to overstate how rare that kind of institutional validation is at the thesis stage. From there, the DUST platform became a key venue for his genre work. "The Guide" premiered there in 2019 and crossed 3.4 million views, and his experimental sci-fi short "Grapefruit & Heat Death!" was subsequently acquired by DUST for a 2020 premiere (TMDB). His Florida-set shorts "Summer's End" and "Vessel" both received national PBS broadcast — which, for short-form work, is genuinely hard to pull off. Meanwhile, his documentary editing practice was running in parallel: "Breaking Their Silence" (2018), which he edited, was featured on CNN, The Today Show, TEDx, and KTLA (TMDB). The more recent period of his career has moved toward longer-form development. He was tapped to co-direct a USC feature-length horror adaptation of "Phantom of the Opera" with backing from producer John Wells (TMDB). He's also developing "Lotería," a Mexican fantasy-adventure series, with Norman Lear's production company ACT III (TMDB). Perplexity research indicates a horror feature based on his short "Hive" — starring Xochitl Gomez — is in development for Tubi and Blue Ice Pictures, and that a short titled "Rosario" was released in 2025. If those projects land, they'd represent a significant step up in scale from the short-film work that established him.
