Genndy Tartakovsky

Tartakovsky's early career put him in the room with some of the best. Work on *Batman: The Animated Series* and *2 Stupid Dogs* gave him foundational experience in American television animation before he broke through as a creator in his own right (TMDB). The breakthrough came with *Dexter's Laboratory* on Cartoon Network — a show about a boy genius with a secret lab hidden behind his bookshelf that became a genuine hit and established Tartakovsky's knack for visual comedy and tight comic timing. Fast, funny, and surprisingly weird. But *Samurai Jack*, which launched in 2001, is the work that cemented his reputation. The series — following a displaced samurai warrior hunting the demon Aku across a dystopian future — didn't rely on dialogue the way most animated shows do. Long stretches of pure visual storytelling, almost no exposition, action sequences that felt choreographed rather than just animated. It ran for four seasons on Cartoon Network before Adult Swim revived it for a fifth and final season in 2017, which won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. He also directed *Star Wars: Clone Wars* for Cartoon Network, a micro-series that brought his graphic, high-contrast style to the Star Wars universe (TMDB). The feature film chapter of his career arrived with the *Hotel Transylvania* trilogy — animated comedies built around Count Dracula and his monster family — where Tartakovsky directed all three installments. More recently, *Primal*, his Adult Swim series following a caveman and a dinosaur who can't speak a word to each other, has earned some of the strongest critical notices of his career. It's a show that shouldn't work on paper and absolutely does. He also co-created *Sym-Bionic Titan* and contributed significantly to *The Powerpuff Girls* (TMDB), rounding out a career that spans nearly every corner of American animation.
