Iqbal Theba was born on December 20, 1963, in Karachi, Pakistan, and he's spent the better part of four decades building one of the more quietly durable careers in American television and film. Most audiences know him from a single role — Principal Figgins on Fox's Glee, the perpetually exasperated school administrator who served as both bureaucratic obstacle and unlikely comic relief across six seasons from 2009 to 2015. That part made him a recognizable face in millions of households, but it didn't define the full range of what he's capable of, and his work before and after the show tells a more interesting story.

Theba arrived in the United States and worked his way through the kinds of supporting roles that don't get you on magazine covers — guest spots, bit parts, the thankless work of building a resume one episode at a time. Then Glee happened. What's striking is how much he did with what could have been a throwaway character: Figgins wasn't written to be complex, but Theba found the man's dignity underneath the pratfalls, the way he'd straighten his tie after being steamrolled by Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) in practically every scene they shared. Actors who've had one big television run can go either direction after it ends, and he's clearly chosen to keep working rather than wait for another Figgins-sized opportunity to land in his lap.
