Kazutoyo Koyabu

Koyabu's career kicked off in 1993, and for much of its first decade-plus it was rooted in the live comedy and variety television world that Yoshimoto Kogyo dominates in Japan. His appointment as chairman of Yoshimoto Shinkigeki in 2006 — a position he held until 2022 — marked him as more than just a performer; he was, for a long stretch, an administrator of one of the country's most recognized comedy institutions (Wikipedia). That kind of behind-the-scenes credibility doesn't always translate to screen work, but in Koyabu's case it seems to have run parallel to a steadily growing acting résumé. On the film side, his role as Sugihara in Girl in the Sunny Place (2013) represents one of his earlier notable screen appearances, followed years later by Nakakita in A Man (2022) — a film that drew serious attention for its identity-and-grief premise (IMDb). He's also set to appear as Detective Isokawa in The Village of Eight Graves (2026), which would extend his film work into character roles with real genre weight. Television drama has been equally active: he played Junji Sayama in Rikuoh (2017), took on the historical role of Nijō Haruyoshi in the NHK taiga drama Awaiting Kirin (2020–21), and appeared as Tōru Shimakawa in the comedic counterfactual What If Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa Was to Become the Prime Minister (2024) — a project that let him work in a register closer to his comedy roots while still functioning within a scripted drama format (DramaWiki). Beyond scripted work, Koyabu remains a fixture in variety television, appearing regularly on Ima-chan no Jitsu wa and semi-regularly on Asapara (Wikipedia). And then there's Genie High. The band — where he plays drums — adds a dimension to his public identity that doesn't fit neatly into the comedian-turned-actor story arc most profiles want to tell. Hard to say if the music career will ever get the same attention as his screen work, but it's clearly not a side project he's abandoned.
