Laura Carmichael

After graduating from Bristol Old Vic in 2007, Carmichael didn't walk straight onto a major set. Hard to say if that grind shaped her patience as a performer, but it's the kind of detail that makes the eventual breakthrough feel earned rather than handed over. The breakthrough, when it came, was Downton Abbey. She joined the ITV and PBS period drama as Lady Edith Crawley, the middle Crawley daughter — a character who starts the series in the shadow of her more conventionally appealing sisters and spends years clawing toward something like independence and self-definition. Carmichael played Edith across the show's full original run, and the role made her a genuine household name on both sides of the Atlantic.
