Lori Petty

Lori Petty was born on October 14, 1963, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and spent the better part of the late 1980s and early 1990s carving out a screen presence that didn't fit neatly into any one category. She's not the kind of performer who arrived with a single defining moment — it was more of an accumulation, a series of sharp, kinetic performances that gradually made her impossible to ignore. Most audiences who know her name know it from one place: the post-apocalyptic, anarchic, genuinely strange Tank Girl.

That 1995 film — Tank Girl: A Cult Classic of 90s Cinema, as it's come to be framed in retrospect — asked Petty to carry an almost uncarryable role. Rebecca Buck, the tank-riding, wisecracking protagonist of the Hewlett and Martin comic strip, is a character built from attitude rather than psychology, and a lesser performance would have left the whole thing hollow. Petty didn't play it safe. She shaved her head, leaned into the absurdist energy, and committed fully to a film that the studio clearly didn't know what to do with. She worked with Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own (1992), where she played Kit Keller — the younger Dottie Hinson's sister, the one who can't quite get out from under her sibling's shadow — and brought a real emotional rawness to what might have been a supporting-role footnote. Hard to say if Petty has ever gotten the sustained leading-role career that her range seems to warrant — that's a question the industry's casting patterns raise more than anything she's done. She's worked consistently, directed as well as acted (her directorial debut The Poker House came out in 2008), and demonstrated across three decades that she doesn't repeat herself.
