Louis Nye

Nye's career broke into a higher gear when he joined The Steve Allen Show — a run that Wikipedia dates roughly 1956 to 1961 — where his Gordon Hathaway character turned the weekly "Man on the Street" sketch into must-see television. The bit was simple on paper: Allen would interview Nye's pompous, fey socialite, Nye would ad-lib something outrageous, and Allen would dissolve into laughter he clearly couldn't control. It worked every time. That chemistry with Allen, alongside ensemble regulars like Don Knotts and Tom Poston, gave Nye a national profile that his pre-television radio and Broadway work hadn't quite managed. When the show's production shifted to Los Angeles, Nye made the move too and transitioned into character work in Hollywood films and television (TMDB). His film credits include The Facts of Life (1960) with Bob Hope and Lucille Ball, The Wheeler Dealers (1963), Good Neighbor Sam (1964), and Cannonball Run II (1984) — a filmography that spans a quarter century but one where, as critics noted, the roles rarely gave him room to really run. He also played Sonny Drysdale, the spoiled stepson of banker Milburn Drysdale, on The Beverly Hillbillies during the 1962 season, doing six episodes that generated more viewer mail than anything else he'd done in television — only for the character to be quietly dropped, reportedly because someone at CBS or a sponsor found Sonny too "sissified" (TMDB). He brought Sonny back briefly in 1966. On the small screen, Nye was everywhere: guest spots on The Munsters, Burke's Law, Laverne & Shirley, Starsky and Hutch, St. Elsewhere, The Cosby Show, and Fantasy Island, among many others (TMDB). He also did voice work — including Inspector Gadget alongside Don Adams — recorded comedy LPs, and appeared on The Gong Show as a celebrity judge in the late 1970s. His last significant recurring role came on Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2005), playing Jeff Garlin's father, which means he was still actively working right up until his death at 92 from lung cancer at his Los Angeles home (Wikipedia).
