Mason Thames is a young American actor from Phoenix, Arizona, born on July 10, 2007, who made an early and unusually strong impression on genre audiences before most performers his age have figured out what kind of career they want. He's best known for his work in horror and thriller territory — not the slick, ironic kind, but the sort that asks a lot from its younger cast members in terms of sustained dread and emotional rawness. That he arrived in this space so early, and held his own so convincingly, is the thing that got people paying attention.

The role that put Thames on the map was Finney Shaw in Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone (2021), a period supernatural horror film set in 1978 in which a boy is abducted by a serial killer known as The Grabber (played by Ethan Hawke, behind a genuinely unsettling mask). What's striking is how much of that film rests entirely on Thames — he's in almost every scene inside that basement, and the movie doesn't work if you don't believe his fear, his resourcefulness, and eventually his defiance. There's a specific moment where Finney picks up the disconnected black phone for the first time, uncertain whether to trust what he's hearing, and Thames plays it with a kind of quiet internal negotiation that you don't often see from actors twice his age. Variety reported that the film grossed over $160 million worldwide against a modest budget, making it one of the more profitable horror releases of that year.

Thames has stayed close to genre work since then, which makes sense — it's where he's been given the most to do. The filmography doesn't yet show a sprawling range of collaborators, but his continued association with the Derrickson-Blumhouse orbit suggests a working relationship built on trust rather than accident. Hard to say if he's actively sought out darker material or if it's simply where the best offers have landed, but either way, there's a consistency to his choices. He doesn't seem interested in the easy pivot to lighter studio fare, at least not yet.

His recent projects make that pattern clear. Black Phone 2 (2025) brings him back as Finney, which is notable — sequels to contained horror films are tricky, and returning to a character who survived largely by circumstance requires a different kind of performance than the original's slow-burn tension. The question isn't whether he can handle the material again, but whether the script gives him somewhere new to go. Alongside that, Regretting You (2025) represents something of a departure — adapted from Colleen Hoover's novel, it's a drama with a more grounded emotional register, centered on family grief and complicated mother-daughter dynamics. It's a different register entirely, and it'll be worth watching how Thames fits into an ensemble that pulls in a different emotional direction than anything he's done before.

At seventeen, Thames is in the strange position of already having a defining credit — one that audiences genuinely remember and return to. That's not nothing. Most actors spend years accumulating work before one role sticks. He's got one that stuck immediately, and now the more interesting question is what he builds around it.
