Mats Eldøen

Eldøen's screen career got its footing in 2008 — a busy year, as it turns out. He appeared in two notable Norwegian productions back-to-back: *Max Manus: Man of War*, the acclaimed WWII biographical film in which he played Edvard Tallaksen, and *Cold Prey 2*, the sequel to one of Norway's most successful horror exports, where he took on the role of Sverre (IMDb). Two very different films. Same year. That kind of range early in a career tends to signal an actor who's not precious about genre. The years that followed brought television work, including the role of Daniel in the 2012 series *Nattskiftet* (TV Guide). He also lent his voice to the animated *Cattle Hill* (2018) and its follow-up *Christmas at Cattle Hill* (2020), voicing the character Gaute in both — a quieter corner of his résumé, but one that reflects the breadth of formats he's worked across. His most sustained television presence came with *State of Happiness*, the Norwegian drama set against the backdrop of the country's 1969 oil discovery, where he played Gunnar Sandvik across the series' run from 2018 to 2022 (Apple TV). That's a long commitment to a single character, and it represents the kind of slow-burn prestige project that tends to define a career retrospectively. More recently, he appeared as Sander Fjellheim in the 2022 series *Headhunters* — an adaptation that brought fresh eyes to familiar thriller territory (Rotten Tomatoes). Running alongside all of this is his theater work: Eldøen has been the artistic director and theater manager of Det Andre Teatret for a significant stretch of his career, contributing to educational children's television through that institution as well (Cappelen Damm Agency). It's a dual life — screen performer and theater administrator — that we don't see often enough acknowledged in how his career gets framed.
