Samara Weaving was born on February 23, 1992, in Adelaide, South Australia, and grew up partly in Southeast Asia before her family eventually settled back in Australia — a peripatetic childhood that, whether by coincidence or design, seems to have fed her instinct for playing characters who don't quite belong where they've landed. She trained and worked in Australian television through the early 2010s, building credits on Home and Away before making the jump to American productions that would redefine her profile entirely. Today she's probably best known to genre audiences for her work in horror and dark comedy, a space she's occupied with a physicality and willingness to commit that not every actor her age has been able to pull off.
About Samara Weaving
The role that changed the conversation around her was Grace Le Domas in Ready or Not (2019). That film — a wedding-night horror-comedy in which Weaving's character spends most of the runtime being hunted through a mansion by her new in-laws — asked her to carry essentially every frame while covered in increasing amounts of blood and formal wear, and she did it without the performance ever tipping into parody. What's striking is how much of that movie rests on the audience's willingness to stay with Grace through increasingly absurd violence, and Weaving earns that buy-in early and holds it. The final scene, where she survives and simply screams at the sky, became one of the more shared images from that year's genre releases. She followed it with Guns Akimbo (2019) and the first season of Ratched (2020), which showed she wasn't going to let one breakout calcify into a single type.
Her collaborations tend to cluster around directors working in genre with some kind of formal or tonal ambition — she isn't chasing prestige drama in the conventional sense so much as finding projects that use genre mechanics to do something slightly stranger. The physical demands of her roles are consistent enough to be a pattern: she runs, fights, bleeds, and survives in ways that require a particular kind of stamina that's less about stunt doubling and more about sustained performance energy over long shooting days. Hard to say if that's a deliberate career strategy or just what the scripts that find her tend to require, but either way it's become a recognizable quality of her screen presence. Not just action. Something rawer than that.
Her recent work pushes further into unconventional territory. Azrael (2024), directed by E.L. Katz, cast her in a near-silent role — a woman in a post-apocalyptic world where speech has been abandoned — which is about as far from the quippy horror heroine of Ready or Not as you can get while still operating in adjacent genre space. No dialogue. Just survival. Weaving has said in interviews that the physical and emotional preparation for that film was unlike anything she'd done before, and the result is a performance that communicates almost entirely through movement and expression. Then there's Borderline (2025), which at the time of writing represents her most recent credit and signals a continued interest in projects that don't fit neatly into marketable categories. Two films, back to back, that ask audiences to meet her somewhere uncomfortable.
She's at a point in her career where the choices are clearly deliberate. The thing nobody mentions enough is that she's still in her early thirties, which means the range she's already demonstrated — comedy, horror, silence, chaos — is being established relatively early, before the industry has fully decided what to do with her. That's either a risk or an advantage, depending on how the next few years go. Variety reported that her casting in Azrael was partly driven by her willingness to undergo extensive physical training for a role that offered no traditional dramatic scaffolding to fall back on. That kind of commitment tends to attract a specific type of filmmaker. The ones worth watching.
