Asagami's career took shape during one of anime's most formative periods. Her role as Yuki Mori in *Space Battleship Yamato* put her in front of a massive audience — Yamato was the franchise that arguably taught Japanese television what serialized sci-fi anime could be. The *City Hunter* years cemented her differently. Saeko Nogami isn't the lead — she's the operator, the fixer, the person who shows up when the plot needs a push. Asagami played her across the original series run and into theatrical features including *City Hunter: Million Dollar Conspiracy* (1990). There's a scene type that recurs throughout *City Hunter* where Nogami drops the bureaucratic facade just long enough to show she actually cares, and Asagami always found that beat without overselling it. She also appeared in *Arcadia of My Youth: Infinite Course SSX* (1982), extending her reach beyond the two franchises most associated with her name. Honestly, the kōdan chapter of her career might be the most interesting thing about her — and it's the part that gets skipped in most writeups. Starting in 1992, she studied under Ichiryūsai Teisui, one of Japan's most celebrated kōdanshi masters, and by 2004 she had earned star status in that tradition, performing as Harumi Ichiryūsai (TMDB). That's a parallel career that demands its own mastery: kōdan storytelling is performed live, solo, with a folding fan and a small desk as your only props, and the performer carries entire historical narratives on the strength of voice and timing alone — which, when you think about it, isn't so far from what she'd spent decades doing in recording booths.
