David James Elliott

David James Elliott is a Canadian actor born September 21, 1960, in Milton, Ontario, who built his career on the strength of a single defining television role before spending the following decades working steadily across film and television in ways that don't always get the attention they deserve. He's probably best known to most audiences as JAG's Harmon Rabb Jr. — the Navy lawyer-pilot who anchored CBS for a decade — but that framing, while accurate, tends to flatten a career that has more range to it than the résumé suggests at first glance.

The JAG years are where Elliott's name was made. The show ran from 1995 to 2005, and at its peak it was pulling in audiences that most network dramas today would consider a fantasy number. Elliott played Rabb as a man who carried a particular kind of squared-away competence — not exactly warm, not exactly cold, but credible in a way that procedural drama requires above almost everything else. Trumbo, directed by Jay Roach and built around Bryan Cranston's performance as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, required its ensemble to function as texture around a very large central performance. Elliott fit that context without friction. It's not a showy role, and that's exactly the point — the film needed actors who understood the period, understood the politics (the Hollywood blacklist, the HUAC hearings, the whole ugly machinery of it), and could land in a scene without pulling focus unnecessarily. He does that.

Elliott remains active in the industry, and there's been renewed interest in the JAG universe through the long-running spinoff NCIS and its expanding franchise — a world he helped establish, even if his direct involvement has been limited. The thing nobody mentions is how much the procedural landscape of American network television owes to JAG's formula, and by extension to the decade Elliott spent embodying it. He's not a figure who courts profiles or generates controversy. He works. He shows up in films like Trumbo, takes the supporting part seriously, and moves on.
