Don Cheadle is an American actor whose career spans four decades and ranges from intimate character work to franchise blockbusters, making him one of the more versatile performers working in Hollywood today. Born on November 29, 1964, in Kansas City, Missouri, he grew up across several cities before studying theater at the California Institute of the Arts. He came up through television and small film roles in the late 1980s, building a foundation of craft before the industry caught up with what he was capable of doing.

His earliest screen credit of note came with Hamburger Hill in 1987, John Irvin's unflinching account of the 1969 assault on Hill 937 during the Vietnam War. The film placed Cheadle inside an ensemble of young actors playing soldiers under sustained, brutal combat conditions — not the kind of debut that puts a face on a poster, but exactly the kind of work that teaches an actor how to hold a scene without stealing it. That discipline would define him. Through the early 1990s he accumulated credits steadily, and by the middle of the decade he had arrived in earnest.
