Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Kurosawa got his start in the 1980s, with his feature debut Kandagawa War History arriving in 1982 — not exactly the film most people discover him through, but a starting point nonetheless. Early work in television kept him busy while he developed the sensibility that would eventually make him a festival-circuit fixture. The real turning point was Cure in 1997. A detective, played by Koji Yakusho, works a series of murders connected by a strange amnesiac drifter — and the film just refuses to give you the resolution you're bracing for. Variety and other outlets recognized it as something genuinely new in horror filmmaking, and it became a touchstone for a generation of directors working in psychological genre cinema (Wikipedia). Pulse followed in 2001, extending his interest in technology, disconnection, and the way modern life can feel haunted even when nothing supernatural is technically happening. What's less discussed is how clean his pivot to drama turned out to be. Tokyo Sonata (2008) — a family slowly fracturing under financial pressure and quiet dishonesty — doesn't look like a horror film at all, but it operates on the same frequency. The dread is just domestic. He's also worked as a screenwriter, film critic, and occasional actor (TMDB), which gives him an unusually 360-degree relationship with cinema that probably informs why his films feel so structurally self-aware. Before We Vanish (2017) brought science fiction into the mix, using alien visitors as a lens to examine what humans actually value when stripped of their assumptions. It's ambitious, occasionally strange in ways that don't fully resolve — but that's Kurosawa. He doesn't do tidy.
