Cox's first real brush with mainstream TV came as a contestant on VH1's I Want to Work for Diddy — not exactly the prestige drama that would follow, but it got her in front of an audience. She then co-produced and co-hosted TRANSform Me, a VH1 makeover series, which showed early on that she wasn't just interested in performing but in shaping the stories being told (Wikipedia). The role that changed everything was Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black, the Netflix prison drama that ran from 2013 to 2019. Sophia — a transgender woman who, in one of the show's most quietly devastating episodes, loses access to her hormone medication while incarcerated — was written with a specificity that TV hadn't really attempted before, and Cox brought a stillness to the character that made those moments land hard.
