Mia Goth is a British actress born on October 25, 1993, in Southwark, London, who built a career working steadily through independent film and prestige productions before arriving — almost fully formed, it seemed — as one of the more compelling screen presences of her generation. She began modelling in her early teens, signing with Storm Model Management, and that background gave her an unusual quality on camera: a kind of studied stillness that directors kept finding uses for. Horror, specifically the kind of horror that cares about character, became her territory.

What's striking is how completely she committed to the work before most audiences had a name to put to her face. Her early film appearances — Brandon Cronenberg's Antiviral in 2012, A Cure for Wellness in 2016, Suspiria in 2018 — established a pattern. She wasn't playing victims. She was playing people whose interiority the camera couldn't quite reach, which made them fascinating to watch. Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake cast her in a dual role that required her to disappear into the film's texture, and she did it without calling attention to the technique. That discipline is rarer than it sounds.

The collaboration with director Ti West is where her career sharpened into something distinct. The two made X in 2022, a slasher film set on a Texas farm in 1979 that played with genre conventions without being smug about it — and Goth played two roles in it, a feat that the film doesn't announce loudly but that rewards anyone who's paying attention. That same year, West and Goth made Pearl: A Deep Dive into Ti West's Horror Masterpiece, a prequel that functioned almost as a one-woman showcase. Pearl is set in 1918 and follows the titular character's psychological unraveling on an isolated farm, and the film doesn't shy away from how far that unraveling goes (there's a monologue near the end that runs several minutes and doesn't cut away — it's genuinely hard to watch, in the best sense). Variety reported that Goth co-wrote the screenplay for Pearl with West, which reframes what the performance is: not just acting but authorship.

Pearl, as a film, demanded something close to total exposure from Goth, and she provided it. The role required her to be funny, then pathetic, then terrifying, sometimes within the same scene. Hard to say if any other actress working in genre film right now could have held that tonal range without the whole thing collapsing. The character's ambitions — she wants to be a star, she can't accept the life she's been handed — give the film its engine, and Goth doesn't play Pearl as a monster so much as someone who simply wants too much and has no safe outlet for it.

She doesn't work in the studio system the way many actors her age do, and that seems intentional. Her filmography skews toward directors with specific visions — Cronenberg, Guadagnino, West — rather than toward franchises or IP. MaXXXine, the third installment in West's X trilogy, arrived in 2024 and moved the story into 1980s Hollywood, with Goth's character now pursuing the fame Pearl always craved. The full trilogy represents an unusual creative achievement: three films made in close succession, each with its own period setting and visual grammar, all anchored by the same performer playing variations on the same hunger. That's not something that happens often. In the film industry as it currently operates, the space to do something that patient and that strange is genuinely hard to find — and Goth, along with West, seems to have found it anyway.
