Pollyanna McIntosh is a Scottish actress born in Edinburgh on March 15, 1979, who built her career across two continents by leaning into the kinds of roles that most performers quietly avoid — morally fractured, physically demanding, often monstrous in the best possible sense. She's worked steadily in genre film and television since the mid-2000s, accumulating a body of work that sits comfortably in horror, thriller, and prestige drama without ever quite settling into one lane. That restlessness is, honestly, a big part of what makes her interesting to watch.

The role that changed everything for McIntosh was The Woman — first in Lucky McKee's 2011 film of the same name, and before that in Jack Ketchum and McKee's Offspring (2009). Playing a feral, near-wordless woman captured by a suburban family, McIntosh didn't rely on dialogue to carry the performance. She carried it with her body, her stillness, the way she'd go completely quiet right before something terrible happened. What's striking is how much restraint the role required — this wasn't screaming-and-running horror, it was something colder and harder to shake. The Woman premiered at Sundance and generated genuine controversy, which tends to be a signal that something real is happening onscreen. Her collaboration with McKee defined her early career, but McIntosh didn't stay in that orbit exclusively. She appeared in The Walking Dead as Jadis — later rechristened Anne — a character who started as an antagonist running a scavenger community and gradually became something more complicated, surviving long enough to cross over into the spin-off Fear the Walking Dead. That's a significant stretch of sustained visibility for any actor working primarily outside the studio mainstream. McIntosh has continued taking on projects that don't ask her to soften. Her recent work includes Double Blind: A Gripping Horror Thriller for 2024 — a film that drops her into a claustrophobic survival scenario involving a pharmaceutical trial gone wrong, the kind of premise that lives or dies on whether the cast can make the paranoia feel earned rather than mechanical. She can. The film puts her in a confined space with a small ensemble and demands the sort of slow-burn tension that requires actors to do a lot with very little. Hard to say if it'll reach the audience The Woman found, but as a piece of work it fits squarely within what McIntosh has always done best: characters under extreme pressure, stripped of easy exits.

At this point in her career, McIntosh occupies a specific and not-easily-replicated space — someone with genuine genre credibility, directorial experience, and the kind of range that lets her move between cult horror and network television without either side of that equation feeling like a compromise. She's not chasing mainstream validation. She doesn't need to.
