Renate Reinsve was born on November 24, 1987, in Solbergelva, a small community outside Drammen in southeastern Norway, and she spent years working in Norwegian theater and television before international audiences had any real idea who she was. That changed fast. When Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World premiered at Cannes in 2021, Reinsve walked away with the Best Actress prize — and suddenly the conversation around Scandinavian cinema had a new name at the center of it.

The Worst Person in the World is the film that defined her, at least for now, and it's worth being specific about why. She plays Julie, a woman in her early thirties who can't quite commit to a version of herself — not professionally, not romantically, not philosophically — and what Reinsve does with that material isn't what you'd expect from a performance that wins major festival prizes. It's not showy. There's a sequence where Julie runs through Oslo, abandoning one life for another in real time, and Reinsve plays it with something close to terrified joy — a contradiction that most actors would soften, but she holds the tension without resolving it. Variety reported that her Cannes win was one of the most enthusiastically received of that year's ceremony, which tracks: the room had clearly been waiting for someone to name what they'd just watched. The film went on to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film in 2022, bringing Reinsve's work to an even wider audience.

What's striking is how much of her appeal comes from a quality that's almost impossible to manufacture — she seems genuinely present on screen, like she's not performing so much as being observed. Trier, who had cast her in a smaller role in Oslo, August 31st years earlier, clearly understood what she could do when given the space to do it. Their collaboration has the feeling of a director building a film around a specific human frequency rather than a set of technical skills. Reinsve doesn't appear to be chasing a particular genre or type; the roles she's drawn to share an interior restlessness more than any surface similarity.

Her more recent work continues in that direction. Sentimental Value, a 2025 film directed once again by Joachim Trier, reunites the two for what appears to be another character-driven drama rooted in emotional ambiguity and the particular texture of contemporary European life. Hard to say if Sentimental Value will land with the same force as their previous collaboration — that kind of lightning is rare — but the fact that Reinsve returned to Trier for this project suggests the working relationship runs deeper than a single successful film. It's a pairing worth watching.

She's now in the position of being genuinely sought after outside Norway, with the kind of post-Cannes momentum that doesn't come around often. Not a star in the Hollywood machinery sense. Something more specific than that — an actress whose name signals a certain kind of seriousness about what a film is trying to do.
