Rupert Grint

Rupert Grint was born on 24 August 1988 in Harlow, Essex, and grew up in a part of England that doesn't exactly breed Hollywood stars — which makes his trajectory all the more interesting. He's best known, obviously, for playing Ron Weasley across all eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011, a run that started when he was twelve years old and essentially shaped the first two decades of his professional life. What's striking is how much he managed to do with a character who could have easily been just comic relief: Ron's fear of spiders in Chamber of Secrets, his chess-match sacrifice in Philosopher's Stone — Grint consistently found the emotional weight underneath the jokes.

The Potter years are the unavoidable anchor of any discussion of his career. From 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone through to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, he appeared in one of the most commercially dominant film franchises in cinema history, grossing collectively over $7 billion worldwide. But being the third lead in a franchise that size can trap an actor — you're famous enough that audiences have fixed ideas about you, but not quite the face the press follows out the door. Grint seemed to understand that problem early, and he spent the years after Potter trying to dismantle it piece by piece.

His post-Potter work leaned hard into darker, stranger material. The TV series Sick Note, Snatch, and — most significantly — Servant, the Apple TV+ psychological thriller he's been part of since 2019, showed a willingness to sit inside uncomfortable, morally murky characters for extended periods. Servant is worth singling out here: produced by M. Night Shyamalan, the show gave Grint a role (Julian Pearce, the sardonic, frequently drunk brother-in-law with more self-awareness than he lets on) that let him be funny and unsettling at the same time, sometimes within the same scene. It's a register he's genuinely good at, and it's not one that Ron Weasley prepared you to expect from him.

That Shyamalan connection leads directly to one of his most recent film appearances. Knock at the Cabin (2023), Shyamalan's adaptation of Paul Tremblay's novel The Cabin at the End of the World, cast Grint alongside Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Ben Aldridge in a tight, claustrophobic thriller about a family held hostage by strangers who believe an apocalypse can only be prevented by a specific sacrifice. Grint plays Redmond, one of the four intruders — a man who's convinced himself he's doing the right thing, which is arguably scarier than someone who knows they aren't. Knock at the Cabin doesn't give him enormous screen time, but his presence in the ensemble fits the film's logic: everyone in that cabin carries something they can't quite put down.

Hard to say if Grint will ever fully step out from the Potter shadow in the public imagination — that franchise is too embedded in a generation's childhood for the association to just dissolve. But the work he's been choosing since roughly 2018 suggests he isn't really trying to escape it so much as build something alongside it. Servant ran for four seasons, Knock at the Cabin landed him inside one of the more discussed genre films of 2023, and the pattern is consistent: smaller casts, enclosed spaces, stories where the tension comes from people rather than spectacle. That's a sensibility. It doesn't announce itself loudly, but it's there in the choices.
