There's a moment in Sean Baker's 2021 film Red Rocket where Simon Rex, playing washed-up porn star Mikey Saber, rolls back into his Texas hometown on a Greyhound bus with nothing but a duffel bag and a grin that somehow reads as both pathetic and magnetic — and you realize within the first ten minutes that you're watching someone who has waited a long time for exactly this kind of material. Rex had spent years orbiting Hollywood in roles that didn't ask much of him: MTV VJ, Scary Movie franchise regular, straight-to-video filler. Then Baker handed him a character who lies reflexively, exploits everyone around him, and remains weirdly, infuriatingly watchable throughout, and Rex delivered something that stopped critics cold. The film earned him a Best Actor win at the New York Film Critics Circle in 2021, and suddenly the conversation shifted from "whatever happened to Simon Rex" to something more serious.

What's striking is how completely Rex disappears into Mikey Saber, a man who can't stop selling himself even when the product is obviously damaged goods. It's not a performance built on technique you can see. It's looser than that, more physical, more instinctive — Rex brings a real-person sloppiness to scenes that a more trained actor might have polished into something less true. Baker reportedly cast him partly because Rex had actually lived some version of the margins Mikey inhabits, and that history shows on screen without ever feeling like confession.

Rex has worked with Baker twice now (Red Rocket being the second collaboration, following a smaller role in earlier Baker territory), and the director's method of casting non-professionals alongside Rex seems to draw something out of him that studio projects never located. The co-stars around him in Red Rocket, many of them first-time performers from the Texas Gulf Coast, push him toward a naturalism that his earlier career rarely demanded. Hard to say if that dynamic would transfer to a different director's set, but the pattern suggests Rex works best when he's the most experienced person in the room and has to earn the scene rather than coast through it.

On the awards front, beyond the New York Film Critics Circle recognition, Rex received nominations from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the Gotham Awards for Red Rocket, and the film placed on numerous year-end top-ten lists for 2021. No Oscar nomination materialized, which remains one of the more discussed snubs of that cycle. Variety reported that his omission from the Academy's shortlist surprised a number of industry observers who had considered him a genuine contender.

His recent project, Unraveling the Mystery of Americana (2025), continues his post-Red Rocket trajectory of taking on character-driven work rather than returning to genre comedy. Details on the film remain limited at this stage, but it signals that Rex isn't treating his late-career resurgence as a one-off. Earlier in his filmography, Beginner's Guide to Sex (2015) showed flickers of the comedic self-awareness he'd later channel more effectively, though the film itself didn't give him enough room to do much with it. The gap between that project and Red Rocket covers a stretch of years when Rex was largely absent from anything that generated serious attention. That absence makes the comeback read less like a comeback and more like a first arrival. Which, honestly, is the more interesting story.
