Cotillard didn't just play Piaf; she physically transformed across decades of the singer's life, aging from a young street performer into a frail, ravaged woman in her mid-forties, and she did it without the performance ever feeling like a technical exercise. What's striking is how little she needs the spectacle around her. She can play against CGI and a Hans Zimmer score and still seem like the only person in the room who's actually thinking.
