Fillion's first real foothold in the industry came through daytime television — specifically the contract role of Joey Buchanan on the long-running soap opera One Life to Live, which earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series (TMDB). That's not a throwaway credit. Soap work is grueling, and landing a nomination out of it signals something. He followed that with a supporting turn as Johnny Donnelly on the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl (TMDB), a show that also featured Ryan Reynolds before either of them became household names. The breakthrough — the one that still defines how a lot of people think about him — came with Firefly in 2002. Joss Whedon's space-western was cancelled after one season, but the fanbase didn't get the memo. When Serenity arrived in 2005 as a theatrical continuation, it gave Fillion and the ensemble a rare second chance to close out a story that Fox had cut short. He also appeared in Slither and Trucker among traditionally distributed films, and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which was distributed online and became its own kind of cult moment — a low-budget, Whedon-produced musical that I'd argue holds up better than most things from that era of internet-native content. His voice work runs surprisingly deep, too: Bungie's Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, Destiny, and Destiny 2, plus 343 Industries' Halo 5: Guardians and the animated series M.O.D.O.K. in 2021 (TMDB). From 2009 to 2016, Fillion starred as Richard Castle on Castle, playing a mystery novelist embedded with the NYPD — a role that ran eight seasons on ABC and cemented him as a reliable network lead. Then came The Rookie in 2018, where he plays John Nolan, a 40-something man who becomes the oldest rookie in the NYPD. He's also an executive producer on the show and its spin-off, The Rookie: Feds (TMDB). Hard to say if that producing credit reflects creative ambition or just smart deal-making, but either way it's a sign of someone who's figured out how to have a long career on his own terms.
