Ethan Coen's career is essentially inseparable from his brother Joel's — at least for the first few decades. The two broke through with Blood Simple in 1984, a low-budget neo-noir that announced a new kind of American independent voice. Raising Arizona followed in 1987, then Miller's Crossing in 1990. Barton Fink (1991) wasn't just a critical success — it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, which is the kind of thing that changes how the industry looks at you (TMDB). The mid-to-late '90s and 2000s were relentless. Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998) — a film whose "the dude abides" has become one of cinema's most quoted lines — O Brother, Where Art Thou? The solo era started quietly. Ethan's first fully independent directorial credit was the documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind (2022), a portrait of the rock-and-roll pioneer that showed he could hold a film together without Joel in the room.
