Palmer's professional debut came in 2004, with small roles in two films released that same year: Barbershop 2: Back in Business and The Wool Cap (Wikipedia). She was eleven. The breakthrough that actually put her on the map, though, was Akeelah and the Bee (2006) — she played Akeelah Anderson, a South Los Angeles kid competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and she carried the whole film. It's a performance that doesn't feel like a child actor doing their best; it feels like an actor, full stop. The years that followed were busy in the way early careers often are — Madea's Family Reunion (2006), Jump In! (2007), The Longshots (2008), Shrink (2009) — while simultaneously she was building a parallel identity on Nickelodeon. True Jackson, VP ran from 2008 to 2011, and she headlined it as the title character. She also voiced Aisha in Nickelodeon's Winx Club revival (2011–2014) and led the TV film Rags in 2012. Her debut studio album, So Uncool, came out in 2007. A lot happening at once, honestly. The 2013 VH1 biopic CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story marked a real pivot — she was playing Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas in a project that demanded something more grounded than teen-TV energy. Her Broadway debut followed in 2014–2015, playing Ella in Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella. Then came Fox's Scream Queens (2015–2016), the Epix drama Berlin Station (2017–2019), and the slasher series Scream (2019). Variety reported that her performance in Hustlers (2019), alongside Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu, drew renewed attention to her dramatic instincts. Jordan Peele's Nope (2022) and One of Them Days (2025) have since earned her the kind of critical press that doesn't come from just showing up — it comes from doing something specific and right with a role.
