Wilson's career got serious traction in the 1980s, a decade that saw him take on roles in French cinema that established him as someone worth watching. Rendez-vous (1985), directed by André Téchiné, and The Belly of an Architect (1987), directed by Peter Greenaway, are the films most often cited from this period. The Greenaway film especially — a slow, strange meditation on obsession and mortality — is the kind of project that doesn't make you famous but does make other directors want to work with you. That's a real distinction, and Wilson seemed to understand it. He didn't chase the obvious path. Through the late '80s and '90s, he kept working across French and international productions, building a filmography that was eclectic by design rather than by accident. Then came the Matrix films. The Wachowskis cast him as The Merovingian in The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) — a character who exists mostly to deliver speeches about the nature of choice and power while looking extraordinarily well-dressed. It's a supporting role, technically, but it's the kind of supporting role that people quote. Wilson brought a theatrical weight to it that fit the franchise's maximalist philosophy perfectly, and when Lana Wachowski returned to the series with The Matrix Resurrections (2021), Wilson came back too (TMDB). That's not nothing — it suggests the character meant something to the story's continuation, not just its past. More recently, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022) showed a different register entirely: Wilson as a Parisian fashion house director, imperious and a little ridiculous in the best way, in a film that's warmer and more crowd-pleasing than most of what he'd done before. The thing nobody mentions is how well he handles comedy when he's given the chance — there's a precision to his timing in that film that doesn't get enough credit. His career, taken as a whole, reads like a deliberate refusal to settle.
